THE OUTLOOK: TINY HOUSE FOR THE HOMELESS

I worked with a local group of homeless people called Camp Take Notice as part as an engagement studio. Camp Take Notice emphasises communitynand taking responsibility for your own life. This approach leads to many people turning their lives around. Recently, they purchased a plot of land and have been working with the city of Ann Arbor toward becoming a tiny house community.

Our class worked together to design and build a prefabricated-panel house in two months with a $4,000 budget. The Outlook provides a comfortable living space for one person and accommodates camp gatherings in only 80 square feet. In order to reduce the monotony of such a small space, the user is offered multiple positions to work and sleep. All furniture functions as storage on top of their normal uses. As the interior team leader, I led group work sessions, taught the team how to use Rhino, and assisted team members with their designs. I also designed the ladder and loft, CNC-routed the ladder, and helped my team build the furniture.
